App Store impressions

What Apple counts as an impression, where the metric appears, and what it cannot prove.

In brief

An App Store impression is counted when an app is viewed on the Today, Games, Apps, or Search tabs for more than one second. Apple includes product page views in the total.

The platform definition

Apple defines Impressions as the number of times an app was viewed on App Store discovery surfaces for more than one second. Unique Device Impressions deduplicate those views by device.

The common misread

Impressions are exposure, not necessarily intentional consideration. Search, Browse, featuring, ads, and repeated exposure can represent very different levels of intent.

The decision it can support

Use impressions to locate changes in visibility and to compare source mix. Do not use them alone to judge listing quality or product-market fit.

Read the number with territory, device, source, product version, and enough time context. A metric can describe an outcome without identifying its cause.
