Mobile app onboarding
Carry the acquisition promise into first value without turning setup, permissions, or account creation into a maze.
In brief
Good onboarding continues the promise that earned the install and removes everything that does not help the customer reach first value safely. Measure activation, not slide completion.
Continue the store promise
If the listing foregrounds one outcome, onboarding should help the customer reach it. Do not open with an unrelated feature tour or organizational history.
Earn each request
Ask for accounts, permissions, preferences, and payment only when the customer understands why they are needed. Explain consequences in customer language.
Choose a meaningful activation event
Activation should represent experienced value, not a button tap chosen because it is easy to count. Validate that the event predicts retention or useful behavior.
Preserve acquisition context
A customer arriving from a specific page or campaign may need a different first path. Use deep linking or carried context when the product can support it reliably.
Primary sources
Rules and interfaces move. Recheck these sources before submission-sensitive work.
