Screenshots as a visual argument

Turn real product value into an honest, legible sequence that survives a one-second scan.

Treat the sequence as an argument

Each frame should earn the next one. A useful sequence often moves from core outcome, to recognizable situation, to differentiating proof, to trust or depth. That is a starting hypothesis—not a universal template.

Give each frame one job

Write a screenshot brief with four columns: frame, single message, product evidence, and asset status. If a frame needs two headlines to explain itself, split the idea or choose the stronger claim.

Design for the scan

Test the first frames at thumbnail size and on the physical devices your audience uses. Preserve contrast, avoid tiny interface chrome, and do not depend on decorative mockups to carry meaning.

Show what exists

Use real, current UI wherever practical. Seed representative demo data without exposing private information. If imagery is illustrative, keep it clearly separate from product capability claims.

Respect the current Apple set

Apple allows one to ten screenshots in JPEG or PNG format without transparency. App previews remain optional and use separate specifications. Upload the highest required display size and let App Store Connect scale where Apple permits; verify the exact device classes for the build you are shipping.

The new iPhone Duo class deserves advance planning, not a premature checkbox. Apple says iPhone Duo screenshots become required in April 2027 for any submitted app or game. Keep layout sources flexible enough for the class, and follow Apple’s latest news as the deadline approaches.

Apple’s October 2026 creative assets are separate from screenshots. A product-page header or search-result asset can create an opening impression, while the screenshot sequence still proves how the app works. See the creative assets guide for the new dimensions and playback behavior.

Connect creative to retention

A high-converting screenshot can still be wrong if it attracts people expecting a product you did not build. Read conversion with activation, retention, refunds, ratings, and support themes.

Practice

Draft the sequence in the workbench, then capture real product states. Validate exact current asset specifications in App Store Connect before export.
